Menemen is one of the most delicious dishes of Turkish breakfast. It is indispensable of especially Sunday breakfasts in Turkey. Menemen is very easy to make. This tasty dish is prepared with only tomatoes, peppers and eggs (sometimes onions are also added). Menemen is usually cooked on the special pan called "sahan" in Turkey. Menemen has a distinctive flavor when it is prepared during the summer season when tomatoes and peppers are fresh. There are different menemen recipes. The most common form is presented below. In addition to the recipe list, you can add additional spices according to your taste. Be careful not to use margarine, especially when making menemen. We prepared this recipe with butter, but if there is no butter at home, you can choose olive oil. Also, if you like the menemen in a more solid form, you can increase the number of eggs or decrease the number of tomatoes. We recommend you to consume it with Turkish simit (bagel) and Turkish tea. The required ingredients for Menemen recipe are listed below:

  • 1 tablespoon of butter (or oil according to your taste)
  • 2 green peppers
  • 1 medium size onion (optional)
  • 2 medium size tomatoes
  • 2 eggs
  • Salt
  • Red chili pepper (optional, if you like hot, use hot chili pepper)

How to make Menemen?

  1. To prepare the Menemen recipe, first finely chop onion and peppers, and dice tomatoes.
  2. Put the butter into a pan and melt.
  3. Then, add chopped onions and peppers and cook until they soften.
  4. Next, add diced tomatoes and cook until tomatoes are tender.
  5. Add salt and red chili pepper and mix.
  6. Scramble eggs in a bowl, pour them into the mixture, and stir.
  7. When the eggs are slightly cooked, turn off the stove.
  8. Serve hot.
